As of May 5, federal health officials are no longer recommending that schools close when a student is confirmed to have the H1N1 flu (prior to May 5, health officials were recommending that schools close for seven to 10 days if there were a confirmed case).
According to the U.S. Health and Human Services office, scientists now believe the H1N1 virus epidemic is no more dangerous than the regular seasonal flu, and schools should respond to cases of H1N1 the same way they would if a student has the regular flu.
As of May 5, no students in District 6 have been confirmed as having H1N1 flu.
Health officials say that the best ways to keep H1N1 and any other kind of virus from spreading are to:
* Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds.
* Cough and sneeze into a tissue or the inside of your elbow.
* If you have flu-like symptoms, then stay home from work or school until 24 hours after symptoms are gone.
Some of the symptoms include fever over 100 degrees F, a persistent cough, excessive tiredness, and a lack of appetite.
